Fabrizio Romano provides update on Emiliano Martinez to Manchester United

Will Emiliano Martinez end up wearing the Manchester United jersey by the end of this summer?

Last season was a complete disaster for Manchester United. It pains those of us who follow Manchester United to even review it. We finished 15th in the Premier League, with performances that bordered on mediocrity, and although we reached the Europa League final, the defeat was yet another scar. Andre Onana, signed to bring us back to safety in goal, was more shadows than lights. His mistakes cost us key games. Today, with the summer transfer window moving on and not a lot of money to spend, we need smart decisions. We cannot afford another year of suffering.

INEOS, the new leadership group, and Jason Wilcox seem to have understood that. They have cooled the idea of big signings for absurd figures. However, they have already spent a fortune to secure Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has departed for Barcelona on loan. The focus is on a striker, but they are not ruling out reinforcing the goal, especially if the opportunity comes without compromising the budget. In this scenario, the name of Emiliano Martínez is beginning to be mentioned. He is a goalkeeper who already knows what it is to lift a World Cup and who has been key in the resurgence of Aston Villa.

Martinez and a real possibility

According to Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel, Manchester United are exploring options to sign Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez. The idea is not to release fresh money, but to consider a trade that does not impact the cash flow. Romano said the club wants to understand the economic scenario. He even mentioned the possibility of keeping Onana and adding a young goalkeeper, but Dibu is on the table. A trade for another player could open the door.

“For the goalkeeper, Man United want to understand financially what can happen. If they want to bring in a young goalkeeper and maybe stay with the current ‘keeper, that is also an option.

“I can tell you that for Dibu Martinez, the idea at United was to discuss maybe a swap deal, so not spending any fresh money on the deal to save the money for a striker. But maybe a potential swap deal.”

Martinez has a contract until 2029 with Villa, but the rumours about his departure have not stopped. He is a leader, has character, speaks loudly in the penalty area, and saves penalties as if they were mere formalities. His profile fits what we need: security, presence and experience. We can’t afford any more mistakes between the sticks.

A gamble that could change the team

Personally, we think he would be a brilliant signing. The Argentine is more than just a good goalkeeper. He has a winning mentality that is needed in this dressing room. Onana has shown moments of quality, but his inconsistency has exposed us on too many occasions. We need serious competition in that position, and if the 32-year-old arrives without spending, even better.

A swap with Jadon Sancho, for example, would make sense. He has no clear future with us. Alejandro Garnacho would be a more painful option, but not impossible if there is another star on the way. The truth is that Villa have already signed a goalkeeper, Marco Bizot, this summer, and that public ‘thank you’ from Martinez sounds like a farewell. We think he wants this step.

If there is a willingness on both sides, we will see him at Old Trafford. We find it hard to believe that INEOS would pass up such a chance. By character, by quality and by cost, Dibu is just what this team needs. We bet we sign him before the market closes.
