£62.5m star’s performance against Leeds highlights the Ruben Amorim blueprint

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim tells the squad to emulate attacker Matheus Cunha after his sensational performance against Leeds United. Amorim wants to change the culture of the Red Devils under his tactical style of play after years of mediocrity.

Amorim wants players who fit his 3-4-2-1 formation and have the mental capacity to consistently carry out his tactical demands. United showed plenty of vulnerabilities last season, while their inability to score goals has persisted since Erik ten Hag’s reign.

Man United have focused on strengthening the attacking department in the early stages of the summer transfer window under Amorim. The Red Devils signed Cunha from Wolves quickly, followed by a recent agreement to sign right-winger Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.

United played their historical rivals Leeds in the pre-season friendly game that ended 0-0, but had many positives for Amorim. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League last season, something they cannot afford to repeat next season.

In the post-match interview (via the Independent), Amorim used Cunha as an example of what he wants from a United player. He said:

“I think Matheus Cunha showed what we need – that is the player when he receives the ball between the lines can be really aggressive in direction of the opponent. We watched that during last season in a different team, so we expect the same thing. Of course, you can see that the connection between him and Bruno (Fernandes) is still not there, but it’s going to be a good connection.”

Amorim needs more players who suit his style of play, like Cunha, to make a significant change at the club. The Red Devils could thrive under the Portuguese the way Sporting CP, his former club, thrived under his successful reign.

Amorim used his first transfer window at Sporting Lisbon to make drastic changes, which eventually helped the club prosper. United fans are hoping that same thing will happen this summer with £62.5m of Cunha starting the revolution.

However, with financial strain and the slow process of selling surplus players this summer, United are racing against time. Rest assured, the fans should feel content that the club are targeting the right players this summer. United have made many mistakes in the transfer market, something they are gradually rectifying in this window.
