Manchester United set to turn attention to £60 million star after completing Bryan Mbeumo deal

Manchester United have Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton in their sights

Manchester United have begun to make bold moves in the transfer market. With INEOS now overseeing sporting operations, the club is pursuing a clear strategy of rejuvenating the squad. The signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha has already been completed, and according to the Manchester Evening News, United have now submitted a third bid for Bryan Mbeumo.

This approach reflects a broader plan to strengthen key areas across the pitch. While the attack is gaining firepower, the midfield remains a concern. Casemiro’s advancing age, Mason Mount’s ongoing fitness issues, and the departure of Christian Eriksen have left the midfield unbalanced, forcing the club’s management to act swiftly.

Mbeumo all but tied up, Wharton in their sights

Adam Wharton, the 21-year-old Crystal Palace midfielder is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after talents in the Premier League. Wharton has not only impressed at club level but also earned recognition with a call-up to the England squad for a recent international tournament. His standout performances, particularly during Palace’s surprise FA Cup triumph, have positioned him as a serious option for top-tier clubs.

Palace value Wharton at around £60 million, significantly more than the £22 million they paid to sign him from Blackburn Rovers last year. Tottenham’s interest has only intensified the competition. Should Manchester United succeed in signing both Bryan Mbeumo and Wharton, their total summer spending could approach £200 million. As we previously reported at the end of last season, the club’s interest in Wharton has been longstanding.

Manchester United should pursue Adam Wharton after securing Bryan Mbeumo, as their midfield needs urgent reinforcement.

Manchester United must prioritise the signing of Adam Wharton, especially now that the deal for Bryan Mbeumo is nearing completion. The midfield is in urgent need of stability and balance. Casemiro no longer controls games as he once did, Mason Mount has struggled with consistency and fitness, and Christian Eriksen has departed. Wharton, with his composure, ball-winning ability, and progressive passing, fits the profile perfectly.

At just 21, Wharton has already proven himself in high-pressure situations, most notably in the FA Cup and with his recent call-up to the England squad. He represents a smart long-term investment and aligns well with the INEOS-led vision for a younger, dynamic squad. Under Rúben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, Wharton could form a balanced double pivot alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

That said, paying £60 million for a player who cost Palace just £22 million a year ago seems excessive. United should aim to cap their offer at £50 million. To stay within PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules), the club must also sell wisely. Offloading players like Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford will be essential to maintaining financial equilibrium.
