Chelsea are looking to hijack Manchester United target Emiliano Martinez
Manchester United remain entangled in their own maze of decisions. The Old Trafford outfit ended last season in a disastrous situation, particularly in goal. According to Mick Brown, former chief scout of United and Blackburn, told Football Insider, the Manchester club have already considered signing Martinez, but they have come up against a wall: nobody wants to take on Onana’s salary and price tag. Chelsea, more agile in the offices and with an open wallet, would be ready to fish in troubled waters.
Aston Villa know they have a valuable asset and, from what is said in England, do not rule out negotiating if the offer is convincing. In the meantime, the door remains ajar for anyone who can make a move. Brown sums it up clearly that the Red Devils opened the opportunity, and Chelsea could take it without looking back.
“Man United can’t afford to sign Martinez while they still have Onana. So that has limited their options massively because it looks like they’re struggling to sell. Martinez is a very good goalkeeper, and from what I hear there are a few clubs who have been made aware that he will be available this summer. One of those clubs is Chelsea, who have been looking to strengthen in that position. It’s different at Chelsea to Man United, because they’ve got about four goalkeepers but they can go and sign Martinez and worry about what to do with the rest afterwards. As things stand, I’d say they’re in a good position to get ahead of United for that deal. The door has been left open so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them make a move. United are very much in danger of missing the boat over this one. They’ve held talks but a Chelsea hijack is looking likely.”
Will the Red Devils practically seal the move?
From our perspective, it’s hard to believe that United, without the European showcase, could seduce a goalkeeper like Emiliano Martinez if Chelsea decide to make a serious move. Stamford Bridge offers the Champions League as a showcase and a structure that, despite their recent stumbles, show signs of wanting to compete again at the highest level. For Martinez, it would mean returning to London and competing for titles, something that weighs heavily.
In United’s favour is the mystique of Old Trafford, the illusion of rebuilding a winning project and the weight of the Premier League. But football is about realism, not nostalgia. If Chelsea put money and project, they have an advantage. But Martinez would be under immediate pressure at a club that burns goalkeepers when things don’t work out.
Is it worth trading Villa Park for a rotating bench? It will depend on what the 32-year-old prioritises: stability or challenge?
