Manchester United have opted to keep goalkeeper Andre Onana after having a meeting with his representatives, focusing on other positions. The news would divide the United fanbase, with the majority of the supporters expecting big changes in the goalkeeping department.
Onana has not enjoyed his tenure at the club since succeeding the legendary goalkeeper David De Gea in 2023 summer. The Red Devils have enjoyed big success with several legendary goalkeepers in their recent history, going back to Peter Schmeichel.
De Gea succeeded another legend in Edwin van der Sar, to continue the healthy trend of long-term keepers providing stability. These legendary figures played a critical role in the club’s establishment as one of the top football institutions in Europe.
Former manager Ten Hag signed Onana from Inter Milan to replace out-of-contract De Gea, by spending £47.2m on the Cameroonian. The 29-year-old came in with a strong reputation after taking Inter to the Champions League final in the 2022-23 season.
However, a series of mistakes since the beginning of his tenure at Man United established a recurring pattern of disappointment. United fans have endured a miserable season, involving the sacking of Ten Hag and the subsequent appointment of Ruben Amorim.
As the Red Devils finished 16th in the Premier League table and lost the Europa League final, changes were expected. Many fans have rightfully argued that the squad overhaul should start with the goalkeeping position due to its critical importance.
There is a lack of trust surrounding Onana, which only increases the probability of mistakes in every important United game. According to The Athletic, United have opted to keep Onana as their primary goalkeeper after meeting his representatives this summer.

The surprising decision will create annoyance among the fanbase, but all we can do is trust Amorim and the hierarchy. United have prioritised the attacking department with the signing of Matheus Cunha and the pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo, while they sell their surplus like Jadon Sancho. Hopefully, the attention will shift to defence soon, as there are a lot of areas of vulnerability that Amorim needs to cover.
