Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres prefer a move to Arsenal over Manchester United this summer, despite the Ruben Amorim factor. Gyokeres enjoyed a prolific rise to stardom under Amorim, during their time together at Sporting Lisbon, winning numerous trophies together.
Amorim joined United in the middle of the last season to succeed Erik ten Hag and save the Manchester club. However, his start to the tenure is nothing short of a disaster, as the team failed to tactically adjust quickly.
Where Ten Hag deployed a conventional formation, with two defenders and two fullbacks, Amorim preferred his unique tactical playing style. The former Sporting CP boss uses a three-man defence and has numerous differences in the other positional departments as well.
However, the biggest problem that has persisted at Man United, even before Amorim’s mid-season arrival, is the central forward position. Rasmus Hojlund has struggled with contribution since joining the club in the summer of 2023 from the Italian club Atalanta.
United signed Joshua Zirkzee last season, and the Dutchman has also failed to establish himself as a reliable number nine. While United have signed Matheus Cunha already and are getting close to capturing Bryan Mbeumo, they need an established striker.
Gyokeres is one of those prolific number nines, currently available in the transfer market, with several top clubs monitoring him. According to the Mirror, Gyokeres prefers a move to Arsenal over United during the summer transfer window despite his association with former Sporting CP boss Amorim. It clearly suggests that the Swedish forward wants to play in the Champions League and compete in a squad with a potential chance of immediate success.
The 27-year-old is available for a transfer fee of around £60 million, which is significantly cheaper in the inflated market. The Sweden international has 97 goals and 28 assists from 102 appearances for Sporting CP, highlighting his incredible consistency.
