Neville warns Ratcliffe: Man Utd have a reputation for being a graveyard now

Gary Neville warns Sir Jim Ratcliffe that Manchester United have a reputation for being a graveyard for players to come. Neville highlighted several failed signings from the past, along with high-waged players still under big contracts with the Red Devils.

United fans have endured a horrible season as the club plummeted to the 16th position with 16 Premier League losses. The Red Devils crashed out of all the domestic competitions and focused solely on the Europa League under Ruben Amorim.

Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag in the middle of the season after the Dutchman’s persistently struggling tenure proved too much. The United hierarchy appointed Amorim after assessing his impressive success at the Portuguese club Sporting CP over the recent years.

Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe faces a daunting challenge this summer as the club implements plan to back Ruben Amorim.

However, Amorim’s tactics proved too much for the United squad to adjust, continuing their steep downfall in the Premier League. The former Sporting CP boss expects strong financial backing from the United management during the summer to turn things around.

Neville told the Sky Bet Overlap Fan Debate that United have a reputation for being a graveyard for any player, warning the club’s new owner, Ratcliffe, before the summer transfer window. He said:

“There’s three or four players that will leave through being out of contract, and he (Ratcliffe) needs to get (another) five or six out. And they’re going to have to pay to get them out. Rashford’s wages now will be paid half by Manchester United. That’s £180,000-a-week, £8million-a-year being paid by United. There’s not one player joined that club that’s improved apart from Bruno Fernandes, and he’s a stand out to be fair, he’s amazing what he’s doing. The rest of them, whether you go back to (Angel) Di Maria and (Bastian) Schweinsteiger, every player that’s signed has gone backwards.”

The Red Devils cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes they have made since their legend, Sir Alex Ferguson, retired. United have spent an immense amount of money on players based on their reputation and not according to their needs.

They have signed many star signings like Schweinsteiger and recently Casemiro, after they regressed a lot due to ageing. At the same time, United spent a huge amount on unknown talents like Rasmus Hojlund, who failed to live up to expectations.
