But here is where things get messy. First off, United might be cool with the idea of a straight swap, but Rashford might be more focused on finding him a club in the Champions League. It is something that Villa may not be able to offer next season. Secondly, Watkins isn’t exactly surplus to requirements at Villa. He is still a crucial part of their plans, and they would probably want extra cash on top if they were to give him up, especially since Rashford’s market value has dipped well below Watkins’ estimated £60 million price tag. And lastly, United’s eagerness to get Rashford off their books could hurt them in negotiations. Swapping a homegrown talent for a 29-year-old striker might feel like solving one problem while creating another.
