Instead, they allegedly proposed a workaround, having Manchester United trigger Carreras’ €18 million buy-back clause, and then purchasing him from the Red Devils for a reduced fee of €30–35 million.
However, the player’s agent (h/t Abola) has now firmly dismissed these claims, calling them “pure fantasy.” He confirmed that Carreras is performing well at Benfica and has no intention of leaving the Portuguese club this summer, as he wants to stay for at least one more season. As it stands, there appears to be no chance of such a move materialising.
“I don’t know where this news comes from. Everything that is said in it is pure fantasy and, as such, does not deserve, on my part, any comment. Carreras is doing very well at Benfica and will continue there.”
The agent’s emphatic denial, calling the entire story “pure fantasy”, effectively shuts down any speculation about a buy-back and resale arrangement involving Álvaro Carreras. His firm stance suggests there is no active dialogue between Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Benfica regarding the player’s future. More importantly, it reflects Benfica’s satisfaction with Carreras’ development and the player’s own desire to stay put, at least for another season, casting serious doubt on the credibility of the original report.
