Fabrizio Romano reveals ‘crucial’ update on Manchester United’s ability to land prolific European marksman

Manchester United are eyeing a sensational summer swoop for Sporting CP hitman Viktor Gyokeres

Manchester United have been working hard behind the scenes to get their transfer business done early, with head coach Ruben Amorim eyeing a massive squad rebuild after a disastrous campaign.

The Red Devils have been languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table for months now, but remain hopeful of qualifying for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.

They prioritised defenders during the winter transfer window, adding the likes of Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven from Lecce and Arsenal, respectively. INEOS’ priority ahead of Ruben Amorim’s first summer window as Manchester United boss are attacking reinforcements, with a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha advancing.

In addition to Cunha, the Premier League giants also want an out-and-out No.9 who can score goals consistently from next season and beyond. This has led to the Sporting CP marksman Viktor Gyokeres, unsurprisingly, emerging as a target for Man United.

Viktor Gyokeres has rebuilt his reputation in Portugal as one of the deadliest strikers on the continent after failing to cut the mustard in England. He developed into one of the most coveted strikers under the tutelage of Amorim at Sporting CP, scoring a mind-boggling 95 goals in 98 appearances.

The Sweden international, who led Sporting to the league title last year, is currently enjoying the best season of his career. The striker is expected to depart Sporting CP this summer amid growing interest from European bigwigs.

Reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano has now given an update on Man United’s interest in Gyokeres. The Italian has revealed that Arsenal are also keen on the Sporting talisman, and any move to United will depend a lot on their transfer budget.

“Nothing is decided so far. Man United but also Arsenal remain keen. For Man United, the Financial Fair Play budget will be crucial to understand how much they can spend on a striker,” Fabrizio Romano wrote in his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter.

The Scandinavian goal machine has been the top target at Old Trafford since Amorim’s appointment in November after they built a strong relationship during their time together at Sporting. He has scored a truckload of goals in the last two years, and entering his peak at 26, Gyokeres would be a sensational acquisition if INEOS can pull off a deal.

United are facing financial restrictions despite their keenness to back Amorim in the transfer market. So, they will not only need to sell well but also qualify for the elite Champions League via the Europa League in order to boost their chances of landing the ex-Brighton and Hove Albion flop.
