Scholes: Manchester United’s PL disaster too big to ignore for Amorim

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that the potential Europa League victory cannot negate the disastrous season under Ruben Amorim. Scholes also believes that the Red Devils are not the clear-cut favourites to win the Europa League due to inconsistencies.

United will face Athletic Club in the Europa League semifinals in May as the competition remains their only possible salvation. The Europa League win would also give them the opportunity to play in the Champions League next season under Amorim.

The Red Devils have endured a horrible season, which started under former manager Erik ten Hag until his mid-season sacking. Amorim succeeded Ten Hag but failed to rejuvenate the club after establishing his tactical style of play in the team.

The squad that Amorim inherited was already struggling with consistency, and their failure to adjust proved more costly for United. The Red Devils are currently 14th in the Premier League after losing 15 games this season, winning only 10 matches.

Writing in his TNT Sports column, Scholes highlighted that the potential Europa League victory for United will not negate the disastrous season under Amorim. He said:

“Man Utd have been a disaster in the Premier League this year. It’s been really difficult to watch and again it was difficult once more against Bournemouth. The Europa League has given them a little bit of life. Winning it will not save their season because the Premier League is your bread and butter and that’s where you’ll be judged, and I think Amorim knows that. There’s a bit of light at the end of the tunnel with the Europa League for the fans especially. They’ve got a tough game against Athletic Club as they’re one of the better teams left in the competition. I think being at home in the second leg helps them.”

The United legend also said that United are not a favourite to win the Europa League due to their inconsistencies. He added:

“If they were away in the second leg, I think they’d really struggle to get through, but if they can go over there and get a result, then the crowd at Old Trafford in that second leg can really get you through. You wouldn’t be putting your money on them and calling them favourites to win it because of how inconsistent they are, but out of the four teams, they’ve got as good a chance as any of them.”

United’s arch-rivals, Liverpool, have already secured the Premier League title, equalling the 20 league titles record of the Red Devils. This event only rubs more salt in the wound of the fanbase, who never expected Liverpool to return so quickly after Sir Alex Ferguson knocked them off the perch.

United need to win the Europa League and finish the season strongly to take that momentum into the next season. Rest assured, the Red Devils are far behind Liverpool but have all the resources to quickly turn their fortune around. Fans are hoping that other clubs will restrict the Merseyside arch-rivals until United returns to where they belong.
