Paul Scholes doubts that Wolves star Matheus Cunha will fit under the tactics of Ruben Amorim amid Manchester United interest. Cunha has played a pivotal role for Wolves as they are now ahead of Man United in the Premier League.
The Red Devils have endured a disastrous season in the Premier League, currently 14th in the table after 34 games. United recently struggled to earn a draw against Bournemouth, despite Evanilson’s sending off in the 70th minute of the game.
The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag as the manager for failing to improve the team after last season’s misery. United appointed Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP, but the Portuguese boss failed to rejuvenate the team that he inherited mid-season.
Amorim immediately established his tactical style of play despite the team’s struggle to adjust to the style from the beginning. The former Sporting CP manager needs to use the summer transfer window to change things at the club next season.
The Red Devils are prioritising the forward position first, and Cunha remains one of the top targets for the club. The 25-year-old has made 32 appearances in all competitions for Wolves, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists this season.
Writing in his TNT Sports Column, Scholes shared his scepticism over the ability of Cunha to adjust under Amorim at United. He said:
“He looks like he’s got the attributes that Ruben Amorim wants. He knows that physically, his team are just not strong or quick enough, so Matheus Cunha is obviously athletic, and he’s got quality with 15 league goals this season. I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute. It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go. The quality of play right now is so poor. And with Cunha, is he a centre-forward or is he a wide player? There’s no doubt that he has quality and of course, it would be nice to sign him, but I worry about where he fits in. You can sign the best three players in the world, and I think they’ll struggle coming into this team at the minute, but they’ve got to start somewhere.”
Scholes’ concerns are justified as United have created a cycle in the transfer market that leads to continuous failure. However, the Red Devils cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes again and need to back Amorim thoroughly.

Cunha has all the qualities to succeed under Amorim and the versatility to adjust to his tactical demands. Furthermore, the 25-year-old has a £62.5m clause, which is justifiable given the nature of the inflated transfer market. While United need to become shrewd in the coming transfer windows, they cannot continuously doubt themselves or risk the repeat of past mistakes.
