Manchester United captain maintains high standards amid Europa League aim

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes maintains his focus on winning silverware by securing the Europa League amid an “unsavable” season. Fernandes believes that the Europa League victory would not save them from the reality of a failed Premier League season.

The Red Devils have endured a miserable campaign in the Premier League, losing 15 games from 34 matches this season. United sacked Erik ten Hag in the middle of the season and appointed Ruben Amorim immediately to rectify their problems.

However, Amorim’s implementation of vastly different tactics failed as the current squad struggled to adjust to the new manager’s demands. As the campaign continued to progress, United had to accept the reality that Amorim cannot change things until this summer.

Bruno Fernandes drops hints on what Manchester United need to target in the summer transfer window to improve the squad.
Bruno Fernandes remains a pivotal player for Manchester United despite their struggles this season.

The former Sporting CP boss needs the players who suit the profile that his tactical requirements desire at the club. The situation will also force many players to leave Man United as they are surplus to the requirements under Amorim.

Meanwhile, the club have to focus on the Europa League competition, which remains their only path to a major trophy. Furthermore, the potential Europa League victory would give United a chance to play in the next season’s Champions League competition.

As quoted in the Daily Mail, Fernandes highlighted that United are focused on winning the silverware through the Europa League. He said:

“I wouldn’t say it’s a reward, I think it will just be successful in terms of the Europa League. It’s very important to do that, to get the silverware this season. But it won’t save anything.”

The Man United captain rightfully assured that the potential Europa League victory would not “save” the current campaign. A club of United’s stature deserve to be at the top of the table, fighting for the Premier League title.

However, they are well below their stature, while their arch-rivals Liverpool have already sealed the Premier League trophy this season. Liverpool’s victory also equals United’s 20th League title, which only rubs more salt into the fans’ wounds.
