Manchester United are closing in on Sporting CP ace Viktor Gyokeres
Manchester United’s attacking woes have been one of the defining issues of their dismal Premier League campaign. The Red Devils have struggled for consistent goals throughout the season, with neither Rasmus Højlund nor Joshua Zirkzee delivering the impact that the squad desperately needed.
Compounding the problem, the futures of Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho remain uncertain — leaving United’s frontline looking increasingly fragile heading into a crucial summer. If United are to return to a competitive level next season, signing a quality forward who can lead the line and shoulder the goal-scoring responsibility must be one of their top priorities.
A difference maker upfront

According to Football Insider, Manchester United are very close to completing the signing of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres. The Swedish forward has emerged as one of the world’s most in-form strikers and is already well-versed in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system from their time together at Sporting. Since Amorim’s appointment at Old Trafford, Gyökeres has been identified as one of United’s top transfer targets.
The Red Devils are also nearing a deal for Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers but are said to be eager to bring in another top-class forward to support him. Securing Gyökeres would be a major statement of intent.
United’s qualification hopes for the UEFA Champions League are crucial to sealing the deal. Currently preparing for a UEFA Europa League semi-final, the club remains optimistic about winning the tournament, which would guarantee a place in next season’s Champions League. The prospect of European football at the highest level, coupled with Amorim’s personal influence, is proving pivotal in convincing Gyökeres to make the move to Old Trafford.

Viktor Gyökeres has enjoyed a sensational 2024/25 season, scoring an astonishing 38 goals in 30 Liga NOS appearances. Of those, 17 goals came at home and 21 on the road, underlining his ability to deliver consistently in different environments. His goals-per-90-minutes rate stands at an impressive 1.35, while his total goal contributions (goals + assists) reach 44 for the season. Gyökeres’ overall goal involvement equates to 1.56 per 90 minutes, with a non-penalty expected goals (xG) figure of 0.82, numbers that highlight his extraordinary efficiency in front of goal.
The Swede is a powerful, instinctive striker with a keen eye for goal. His blend of physical strength, quick footwork, and clinical finishing with both feet makes him a major threat, especially on the counterattack. Gyökeres would undoubtedly inject serious firepower into Manchester United’s frontline.
However, there are valid concerns. Gyökeres has expressed a preference for Champions League-caliber clubs such as Arsenal, and his limited experience at the very highest level of European football could pose a risk. With a significant fee involved, some within the club may feel that investing in younger, already Premier League-proven talents like Liam Delap could offer greater long-term value and less risk.
