Manchester United scouts keeping a keen eye on Mateo Retegui
Manchester United desperately need to sign a world-class striker in this summer’s transfer window. The team has been crying out for a reliable source of goals, and the struggles of Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee have only made the need more glaring. While Højlund shows flashes of brilliance, he still lacks the killer instinct to consistently convert chances.
Meanwhile, Zirkzee’s adjustment to the relentless pace and physicality of the Premier League has been slow and less effective than hoped. The absence of a clinical, prolific No. 9 has already cost United valuable points in crucial matches. Frustration among the fans is growing, and the team’s attacking options look increasingly toothless and ineffective.
Securing a proven goal scorer, someone of the calibre of Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen, could transform United overnight, delivering the firepower needed to truly compete for top honours again. With each passing day, the urgency to address this glaring weakness only intensifies.
Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Mateo Retegui

According to a report from Quotidiano Sportivo, Manchester United are scouting Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui and closely monitored him during the weekend’s match. Retegui has been in sensational form for both his club and national team, making him an exciting prospect. It will be interesting to see whether the Red Devils move forward with an initial offer for the striker.
The Serie A club reportedly value Retegui at around €60 million, a fee United have the financial muscle to meet. At just 25 years old, Retegui could represent a significant long-term investment for the club.
Retegui has been in outstanding form during the 2024/25 Serie A season, scoring 23 goals in 31 appearances. Notably, nine of those goals have come at home, while an impressive 14 have been scored in away games. Retegui boasts a goals-per-90-minutes rate of 1.04. In total, he has registered 28 goal contributions (goals + assists) this season, averaging 1.27 goal involvements per 90 minutes. His non-penalty expected goals (xG) per 90 minutes stands at an impressive 0.92.

The Atalanta striker would undoubtedly be a top-class signing for Manchester United. His Serie A numbers clearly show that he is an incredibly clinical finisher, exactly the type of striker United’s struggling attack needs. Retegui’s physically imposing frame, sharp movement inside the box, and ability to score with both feet and his head make him perfectly suited to the demands of Premier League football.
With an estimated transfer fee of €50–60 million, Retegui represents a tremendous value-for-money upgrade over the likes of Højlund and Zirkzee. United must act quickly, as there is growing concern that rivals like Arsenal or PSG could swoop in and snatch him away if they hesitate any longer.
