Manchester United are eyeing a summer move for Matheus Cunha
Manchester United have been looking to bring in a new striker when the summer transfer window comes around, with the Premier League heavyweights considering dipping into the transfer market for a number nine for a third consecutive summer window, which shows their underlying struggles to capitalise on big-money signings. But we aren’t here to talk about the Red Devils’ problems in dealing with the transfer window; we are here to take a stand on this budding transfer news as the club targets Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.
Now this is an interesting transfer given that the Brazilian has been playing some exciting football in the ongoing campaign, where he has showcased not only his ability to wiggle through tight spaces but also his goal-scoring prowess. The 25-year-old has netted 14 top-tier goals in the 2024/25 campaign and has been an integral reason for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Premier League survival.
And while he was linked with a move away from Molineux Stadium in the winter transfer window, the Premier League side found a way to keep hold of him and have prompted his loyalty with a new contract and a promise of a summer departure if a considerable offer were to come in for his signature.
We will be heading into the summer window, and this one looks like a striker’s summer given how many big clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea would be in the market for a new number nine. And by the looks of it, Ruben Amorim is set to prioritise the former Atletico Madrid striker, but how will he fit into the Portuguese’s playing style at M16?
How can Cunha fit in at M16?

Ruben Amorim likes to have a system that deploys tactical positioning in a highly disciplined manner, where the players are highly adaptive to interchanging positions while deploying a fluid sense of sequences. Now we do know how Cunha is apt in pressing and is known for his big lungs, and he could well bring that into the equation. Moreover, the fact that he can change his playing position in-game from striker to second striker and out wide as well will bring a lot of much-needed dynamics to the roster at Old Trafford. Moreover, there is a league-wide appreciation for Cunha’s ability to link up plays in tight spaces in the final third while also having the ability to drop in and spread the play out wide when needed (we have seen him do both magnificently in the ongoing Premier League campaign).
Now he can be used in a direct role as well as an interchanging role where he drops in to create spaces for someone like Bruno from number eight,t or maybe the wingers running from outside to inside to take advantage of the spaces behind.
Amorim will want to use his dribbling abilities and his creative talents to make an impact within his system.
Now, where does Cunha stand when compared to Zirkzee?

To start with, the Wolves forward has considerable experience in big leagues, especially grinding it out with Wolves for the past season, and you could see how that top-flight experience gives him an edge in a lot of situations. While Zirkzee has top potential, he hasn’t displayed the physicality that Cunha has when dealing with pressing defenders. Moreover, Cunha is a more clinical threat upfront, and he always seems to know where the goal is, whether he is shooting from five yards or fifteen. Moreover, last but not least, the Brazilian is more apt technically and tactically, as we have seen how he operates for Victor Pereira’s Wolves throughout the season, while Zirkzee has struggled to adapt to the tactical know-how at Old Trafford.
Author’s Opinion
If United can find a way to sell Zirkzee for a decent price then any move for Cunha would apparently be highly appreciated among the supporters at Old Trafford, but the club will have to possibly take up a considerable financial loss in the whole transaction, given how Cunha is expected to cost marquee fees.
