Antony is thriving on loan at Real Betis, with the club now prepared to offload him permanently
At Manchester United, when Antony was playing for the first team, few expected him to turn into an actual asset on the field. But since his loan move to Real Betis, he has become an important player, has earned a regular starting position, and has started to contribute to the build-up play regularly.
In a recent interview with ESPN, Antony said that his off-the-field issues impacted his performances, and that feeling more settled in his personal life has been a major factor in his rebirth as a player.
Antony experienced a challenging period during his time at Manchester United due to off-field issues that impacted his form. After a decent start, the Brazilian fell off a cliff with his performances and never really managed to recover.
In September 2023, his ex-partner Gabriela Cavallin alleged he had violently abused her. She was followed by another woman, Ingrid Lana, who made similar allegations regarding an incident in Manchester. The allegations prompted a dual investigation from Brazilian authorities and the Greater Manchester Police. Antony denied all allegations made against him. The investigation involving Brazilian police ended in August 2024, and he was never arrested or charged. The ramifications and personal issues, however, clearly weighed heavily on him and were a reminder to everyone that sometimes, life off the football pitch can weigh heavier than the profession of being a footballer.
Antony reflects on his past struggles
Antony, in his interview with ESPN, admitted that his personal life significantly affected his form during his time at Manchester United. Reflecting on his struggles, he acknowledged that the challenges he faced off the pitch deeply impacted his performances. He pointed out that his inclusion in a World Cup squad and a high-profile move to United weren’t without reason… he knows his worth, even if others tend to focus only on recent form without understanding the full context.
Looking back, Antony recognised that while he experienced both highs and lows at United, he believes he could have done more and performed better overall.
The Winger speaking with ESPN admitted
“I think that, apart from my football life, my personal life got in the way a lot, because of the things I went through, the moments I lived there,” he explained. “Like it or not, it’s affected me a lot.”
“It’s not for nothing that I went to a World Cup, it’s not for nothing that I was sold to United for a lot of money, and I know my worth. People look at the moment, but they don’t look at the bigger picture, what happens to bring things about.”
“So, as I said, my feeling at United was that I had good moments, bad moments too, but of course I could have done more, I could have done better.”
Antony further reflects on his relationship with former manager Erik Ten Hag
As his time at Manchester United drew to a close, Erik ten Hag, who was responsible for bringing Antony to the Premier League, opted to drop the winger in favour of Amad. Despite the decision, Antony made it clear that he holds no hard feelings towards his former manager and maintained that their relationship remained respectful.
The Winger, in the same interview, expressed his gratefulness for the Dutchman
“He helped me a lot in the Netherlands, and in England too, even though the opportunities didn’t come the way I wanted to. But that’s the coach’s choice, I don’t hold any grudges or anything.”
“On the contrary, I’m very grateful for everything he’s done with me, for all the conversations too. He’s a coach who will certainly be in this story because he helped me a lot.”

Since the move to Seville, Antony has played 16 times for Real Betis and has four goals and four assists to his name. Manager Manuel Pellegrini is very keen on keeping the Brazilian beyond this season, but admitted that Antony’s wages could be a significant barrier.
