Another former Manchester United star has echoed Roy Keane’s criticism of Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United’s season has unfortunately not lived up to the lofty expectations that surround the once-greatest club in England, and as they currently sit in 14th place in the league and have been eliminated from any international or domestic competitions, the Europa League now remains the only trophy opportunity this season. In the midst of all the chaos, a former player has backed comments by Roy Keane, who suggested Bruno Fernandes is not doing a good job leading the team. Keane was captain of the club from 1997 to 2005, and he has been critical of the current captain since he arrived at the club.
After United’s substantial loss of 4-1 to Newcastle on Sunday, Keane again had a dig at Fernandes in his Sky Sports analysis after the match. After the loss, Fernandes vented his frustration towards his teammates, saying he “knows” how good they can be before shifting his focus to United’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon on Thursday. But even the move away from the direct loss didn’t stop Fernandes from receiving words of criticism from Keane, who dismissed the midfielder’s post-match comments as “soundbites”.

United’s season depends on the Europa League
Keane also questioned Fernandes’s leadership, stating that the midfielder’s comments lacked substance. Former United goalkeeper Ben Foster also echoed similar concerns as he sees a lack of accountability within the players. Foster had made a pretty honest and blunt statement on his ‘Fozcast’ podcast saying that the current United squad lacks characters who are willing to confront and challenge each other, and blamed the players for concentrating more on their own agendas and not the team.
Former England and Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster delivered a scathing verdict on Manchester United’s leadership void, aligning his views with those of Roy Keane. Foster criticised the team for lacking strong personalities and pointed out Bruno Fernandes as a prime example of ineffective leadership.
Keane, speaking after United’s 4-1 loss to Newcastle, highlighted Fernandes’s tendency to deliver repetitive post-match comments without backing them up with meaningful action. While he acknowledged that Fernandes “fronts up,” Keane dismissed his remarks about team belief as hollow. He pointed to Diogo Dalot’s failure to defend properly and questioned whether Fernandes holds his teammates accountable behind the scenes.
Keane stressed that real leaders demand more from those around them, not just through words but actions. He noted the burden Fernandes carries in midfield but reiterated that leadership requires more than just addressing fans… it requires driving standards internally.

While Bruno Fernandes’ words don’t always translate into action and may not reflect the full picture, he remains the one player at Manchester United who consistently plays with passion and commitment. Despite the criticism from Roy Keane and Ben Foster, their comments shouldn’t overshadow the fact that Bruno is currently the heart and soul of the club.. a player who wears the badge with genuine pride.
