Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker question Ruben Amorim’s impact at Manchester United
A year ago, fans and pundits voiced their frustration at Erik ten Hag remaining in charge of a club as historic as Manchester United, citing inconsistent results and unconventional tactics. Many believed Ruben Amorim would be the man to finally bring meaningful change to Old Trafford.
Yet, since his arrival, little has improved. United remain stuck in 13th place in the Premier League and have only the Europa League left to fight for, hardly an upgrade on last season’s eighth-place finish and League Cup run. Pundits Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have both remarked that Manchester United have shown no tangible progress under Amorim’s leadership.

Ruben Amorim took charge of Manchester United late last year, inheriting a squad already struggling in the Premier League. Since then, he has introduced tactical changes and moved on some of the squad’s deadwood, attempting to reshape the team in line with his footballing philosophy.
However, with few signings made since his arrival, Amorim is still operating without the ideal personnel to fully implement his vision. While fans may have expected more visible progress by now, there’s a growing argument that development has been minimal. Speaking after United’s goalless draw with Manchester City on The Rest is Football podcast, Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker both agreed that they’ve seen little evidence of genuine improvement under Amorim’s leadership.
We have to agree with the pundits here
Shearer didn’t mince his words, asking bluntly, “Do you see any improvement with Manchester United?”
Lineker responded that he hadn’t seen any real progress under Ruben Amorim, a sentiment Shearer quickly echoed. United remain marooned in the bottom half of the Premier League table, and with both domestic cups already out of reach, their season now rests entirely on the Europa League.
Amorim’s men will travel to Lyon later this week for the first leg of a crucial quarter-final tie, fully aware that winning the Europa League is their final opportunity to salvage something from an otherwise disappointing campaign.

It’s still too early to pass final judgment on Ruben Amorim. To properly evaluate his impact, he’ll need the backing of a full summer transfer window.
While he may not have full control over recruitment, the United board are expected to bring in players suited to his footballing philosophy. Once that support is in place, the margin for excuses will narrow, but for now, it’s premature to be overly critical.
