Ruben Amorim greenlights Manchester United pursuit of Sporting CP star

Ruben Amorim has given the green light for Manchester United to sign Francisco Trincao

Manchester United are preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window, where player sales will be crucial in generating funds for high-profile signings. The squad is in dire need of a transformation if the club hopes to mount a serious challenge next season. Among the potential departures are Marcus Rashford, currently on loan at Aston Villa, and Antony, who is spending the season at Real Betis—both of whom could be sold to raise much-needed capital.

According to The Mirror, United have expressed concrete interest in signing Francisco Trincão, with manager Rúben Amorim reportedly giving the green light for the move. The former Sporting CP boss is eager to reunite with the winger, who flourished under his system in Portugal. Sporting could face a significant squad exodus this summer, with several players attracting interest across Europe, none more so than striker Viktor Gyokeres, another player the Red Devils are keen on.

Manchester United want to sign Trincao

Francisco Trincão is a dynamic Portuguese winger whose flair and versatility could bring a fresh spark to Manchester United’s attack. Known for his silky dribbling, sharp vision, and creative unpredictability, Trincão is a constant menace for defenders. During his stint at Wolves, he averaged an impressive 0.96 nutmegs per 90 minutes—ranking among the highest in Europe’s top leagues, a testament to his confidence and technical prowess.

Since returning to Sporting CP, the 24-year-old has rediscovered his best form, contributing 11 goals and 12 assists across all competitions this season, showcasing his ability to both create and finish chances in the final third.

His ability to play across the front line fits Ruben Amorim’s fluid 3-4-3 perfectly, adding dynamism to United’s attack. With Rashford and Antony possibly leaving, Trincao’s creativity and goal threat could be the spark United need to reignite their firepower.

The winger has scored eight goals in 26 matches so far in the Liga NOS 2024/2025 season. Overall, Francisco Trincao’s goals scored per 90 minutes is 0.32. Moreover, his total G/A (goals + assists) is 19 for this season. His goal involvement equates to 0.76 per 90 minutes. The winger’s non-penalty xG per 90 minutes is 0.34.

However, United won’t be finding it easy to sign the winger. He has a release clause of £50m in his contract but United might be forced to pay more than that value. Sun has reported that his former club, Barcelona, retain 50% of the sell-on clause in any deal. With Sporting eyeing close to £35m for his sale, United will have to at least pay £70m for his signing. This for me looks too much for Trincao, especially given the lack of Champions League income.

Although Amorim has given his blessings for the transfer, it remains to be seen if United can afford to go all ion for Trincao. After all, the squad needs a surgery rather than just a cosmetic makeover.
