The legends from Manchester United and outside are known to share their thoughts on their former club. From Roy Keane to Gary Neville stressing how and what needs to be fixed, to Michael Owen and Rio Ferdinand stressing about the structure every weekend. Newly added to the list of pointing fingers at Old Trafford is their icon Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Erin Ten Hag go back and forth
Ronaldo did not hold back on his feelings during his interview with Rio Ferdinand. He mentioned the fallen structure and Erin Ten Hag’s mindset. Talking to FiveUK he said:
“Man United need time to rebuild because it’s still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change”
“They understand that. This is the only way”
“This is why they show, they start to change again, the structure of the club, the president, the infrastructures and everything”.
“The owners of the club are investing in the training ground. I’m happy because things are changing”.
“I’m not happy with the way it all happens, but in the same way, we cannot control some points of our life sometimes, but it’s done, already done”.
Erin Ten Hag has surprisingly responded to the Portuguese. While addressing many injury situations and team news, according to Fabrizio Romano the Dutch head coach responded to Ronaldo by saying:
“He said that Man United can’t win the Premier League. He said this, “if you read the article very well”.
“Ronaldo is far away in Saudi, far away from Manchester. Everyone can have an opinion. It’s okay!”.
Have the Standards been a problem for Erin Ten Hag?
The words coming from Ten Hag make him sound like he’s handling the situation calmly. However, It has been years of sequence as of now with him facing the tough critic. From his transfer strategies to the mindset of winning leagues. Erin ten Hag has spent over £600 million since he arrived in 2022. Not only that, his treatment of his players hasn’t been making real sense either. He seems to refuse to let players go while not having them even on the bench either. One day he has too many options for a position and the other it seems there is no squad depth.
Ronaldo in his interview at FiveUK also stresses how the Dutch think saying:
“You cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the Premier League or Champions League”.
“You’ve to say like: maybe we’ve not the potential but we’re going to try. You have to try!”,
This puts a question on whether it has been the standard problem. If Ten Hag isn’t prepared to compete for the level, we cannot expect his squad to perform day in and day out. Manchester United finished eighth last season which was their worst position in Premier League history. We’ve seen in the past that simply signing new big names isn’t going to just cut it for the Red Devils. Having a proper system with a dedicated starting lineup is something that’s been out of Old Trafford for a minute now.

United hasn’t started this season ideally either. With three games in, they are placed in the bottom half of the table. Conceding early in games and looking for a dying whisker doesn’t show real signs of confidence. With speculations from other legends about Ten Hag being on thin ice and Ronaldo getting things off his chest, this is a nervy situation for the head coach. These coming weeks are some really important days for Ten Hag as his side plays Southampton on Saturday.
