Man United eyes €25m signing after major transfer setback

Manchester United are ready to sign Sofyan Amrabat permanently from Fiorentina after their failed pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte

Sofyan Amrabat could join Manchester United permanently from Fiorentina after they failed to sign Paris Saint-Germain defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte. The Red Devils struggled to negotiate a justified deal with PSG for Ugarte as the new Premier League season approaches.

United manager Erik ten Hag wants a natural number six with energy to play alongside Kobbie Mainoo in the midfield. Current options Casemiro, Mason Mount and Scott McTominay have struggled with consistency or lack the tactical input that Ten Hag demands.

Casemiro has lost his pace and energy immensely to play as a regular for the Red Devils in the role. Opposition midfielders exploited his vulnerabilities last season to score goals with a huge gap between the midfield and United’s defence.

Mount has struggled with both injuries and inconsistency as Ten Hag used him in several positions whenever he was available. The Englishman is not a reliable partner for Mainoo as the Red Devils head into the next season. At the same time, McTominay scored some crucial match-winning goals but he has struggled in the deeper roles.

According to the Telegraph (via Mirror), Man United have Amrabat as the midfield option after their failed pursuit of Ugarte. PSG are demanding a price that would recoup the amount they spent on the Uruguayan last summer to sign him.

After signing Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro for a significant amount, United needs to keep tabs on their spending. The Red Devils faced issues with PSR and FFP rules in recent seasons due to their high consistent spending.

For Amrabat to join United, Fiorentina needs to lower the price from what the two clubs agreed last summer. Amrabat started with Mainoo in the double-pivot midfield during United’s FA Cup triumph over rival Manchester City last season.
