Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has decided to keep youngster Harry Amass at the club to continue his development
According to a report from The Athletic, Harry Amass will stay at Manchester United to continue his development and will not go out on loan this season.
Manchester United have just returned home after their US pre-season tour, with their preparations for the upcoming new season ending on a sour note with a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool in South Carolina. They have had several injury problems in the backline that led to head coach Erik ten Hag handing some youngsters opportunities to impress. One of them was Harry Amass.
Amass, especially, was one of the standout academy stars of Man United’s US pre-season tour, starting all three games at left-back and impressing. The teenager’s performances in the opening two games were promising but the third one turned out to be a bit of a struggle as he came up against one of the Premier League’s best players in Mohamed Salah. His maturity, decision making and defensive traits were tested by Salah, who assisted for Liverpool’s second goal on Sunday.
Despite him still being raw and lacking experience, the aforementioned report says Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff have decided to keep Amass at the club. This decision perhaps has been taken owing to the lack of options Erik ten Hag has at his disposal at the moment.
Tyrell Malacia has started his rehabilitation after missing the entirety of last season with botched knee surgeries. However, he will still take up to two months to become fully fit before he is integrated into team training.
Ten Hag’s first-choice left-back, Luke Shaw has just returned to Carrington from extended holidays after representing England in the Euro 2024 final against Spain. The 29-year-old has become injury prone in recent years, which was well documented last season as well when he only managed 12 Premier League appearances.
Keeping Amass at the club to continue his progress, thus, should excite the fans. The teenager has been earmarked as one for the future for quite a while now. Usually, young players with potential are sent out on loan to get regular game time and first-team experience but the fickle fitness condition of Shaw and Malacia means Amass is best served staying at the club.

With Malacia still out and Shaw just returning from his vacation, Amass will want to capitalise on the opportunities that come his way. The 17-year-old is certain to be involved in some capacity in the FA Community Shield final against Manchester City on Saturday. The United fans won’t be surprised at all if Ten Hag makes a brave call of starting him in the season’s curtain raiser.
