Injury-ravaged Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia is still some way off from returning to full training
Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia is unlikely to be ready to play again for another two months, head coach Erik ten Hag has revealed via The Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst.
The Netherlands international missed the entirety of the 2023/24 season with a serious knee injury. He has not played for Manchester United since May 2023 due to two botched knee surgeries and the left-back is continuing his rehabilitation at the club’s Carrington training complex.
Tyrell Malacia had been scheduled for a comeback in January this year after knee surgery but a serious setback meant the entire past season went without him clocking a second on the pitch. However, there’s a positive update on his long road to recovery, with Erik ten Hag stating the full-back is “now in a good place”.
Malacia’s long absence and Luke Shaw’s injury struggles meant that the Red Devils spent much of the last season without a specialist left-back. Shaw is due to report for training next week after representing England at the Euro 2024 final against Spain in Germany.
Man United don’t have a senior left-back at Ten Hag’s disposal at the moment, with academy kids Harry Amass and Sam Murray featuring in that position throughout the pre-season. The Dutch tactician is clearly lacking depth in the left-back department, and the return of Malacia will come as a massive boost for him and the squad.
The 24-year-old is pencilled in for a return in October, and while that means he is still some way off returning to full team training, it is good news for the left-back, the manager and the fans. Malacia will be hoping to complete his rehab without any setbacks and regain his form and confidence in the coming months.
