Steve Bruce urges Manchester United to retain Bruno Fernandes

In a recent appearance on talkSPORT, Steve Bruce urged Manchester United not to let Bruno Fernandes go this summer.

The former Red Devils captain had this to say on the current United skipper:

“He cannot leave.

“For me, one of the shining light these past years has been Bruno. He plays with huge intensity.

“Yes, he gets frustrated at times and he can be a bit petulant at times, but in terms of a footballer, when you look at the statistics, he plays 50 games a season, he scores 15–20 goals a season, tops in assists.

“He’s a top, top player. You don’t want to lose him.”

In recent weeks, the Portugal international has been linked with moves away from Old Trafford. Barcelona and Bayern Munich have shown an interest, with recent reports claiming that Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi Pro League outfit, Al Nassr, are willing to bid as much as €150 million for his services.

Fernandes’ current £240,000-a-week contract at United runs until June 2026. Right now, he’s with Portugal preparing for UEFA Euro 2024.

Who knows what will happen this summer?

United have so far shown no interest in letting Fernandes go. This is good start. But he is about to turn 30, so his value is not going to appreciate going ahead.

Yes, Fernandes is one of United’s most important players, but he’s not a player United should stop from leaving in the face of silly money, like anywhere close to €150 million.

United’s new sporting owners have pledged that they intend to set the club in the right direction in the coming years. They’d therefore be wise to accept a €150m offer for a to-be veteran.
