Aston Villa have concrete interest in Harry Maguire amidst Tottenham Hotspur links

As per Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News), Aston Villa have concrete interest in signing Manchester United defender Harry Maguire amidst links from Tottenham Hotspur.

Maguire is widely expected to leave United after falling down the pecking order at an alarming rate. He started the first two games of the season before getting dropped for the third game.

Since then, the England international hasn’t been the first-choice centre-back. It seems as if the Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag does not fancy the former Leicester City player in his regular XI.

With Villa playing European football next season, they might be aiming to sign more players and add depth to the squad. Unai Emery’s pragmatic style of football may suit the way Maguire plays too.

For Tottenham, it makes no sense to sign a player who might struggle if played in a high-line system of new boss Ange Postecoglou.

Since doing well for a period of time in a deep-defending system under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Maguire has struggled for confidence and compatibility in the team.

The 30-year-old is still a good player with a lot of pedigree and international experience. But, his drawback is that he is suited to a certain style of play. Hence, England boss Gareth Southgate keeps on picking him despite his lack of club football.

After coming from Leicester with a heavy price tag, a lot was expected from Maguire. Fair to say, the Englishman has delivered just the opposite of that expectation.

If he leaves this summer, it would be the right time for him to do so. At 30, he can still reinvigorate his career somewhere rather than warming the bench in a United shirt. Villa should sign him and give him the chance to rekindle his career. They can at least offer him UEFA Europa Conference League football next season.
