Loaned-out Manchester United winger Amad Diallo gets high praise from Sunderland sporting director

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman spoke highly about Amad Diallo, who spent the current season on loan from Manchester United in the North East.

Amad had a successful spell at the Stadium of Light, scoring 14 goals and assisting four in 43 appearances in all competitions.

His goals and performances were one of the main reasons why Sunderland finished in the playoff places in the Championship, only to narrowly lose to Luton Town in the semi-final tie.

Here’s what Speakman said about Amad’s spell at the club (h/t Sunderland YouTube channel, via Manchester Evening News):

“Amad’s performances in the games – not just with the ball but some of his defensive work, his energy, his pressing – the way he has taken to the supporters, he’s absolutely bought in to what we required of him. And he’s got a really nice personality which I think hundreds and thousands of Sunderland supporters have taken to.”

We all know Amad is a left-footed winger who prefers to operate on the right. He has played as a number 10 and a left-winger in the past as well.

During this season, the 20-year-old developed an extra edge to his game through goal and assist contributions. He is not a tricky winger anymore, but a genuine threat to the opposition goal.

It remains to be seen whether United boss Erik ten Hag fancies taking a stern look at the player during the pre-season before making a decision on his future.

The Ivorian has all the qualities to become a very good squad player for the Red Devils next season and develop from there. With only Antony as a genuine left-footed winger in the squad, ten Hag might want to keep Amad from next season onwards.

The 20-year-old’s performances in a Sunderland shirt would certainly help in that cause. Now, it would be up to the player to showcase his talent and hunger on the training field to catch the eye of the manager ahead of the start of the next campaign.
