Erik ten Hag confident Manchester United will reach contract agreement with David de Gea

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is confident that the Red Devils will reach an agreement with David de Gea on a new contract soon.

The Spain international’s existing deal with the Old Trafford side is set to expire at the end of the season. As a result, the 32-year-old will be a free agent in the coming weeks if the Manchester-based club do not come to a consensus with the shot-stopper.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag refused to clarify why it has taken so long to tie De Gea’s future down and instead expressed belief the goalkeeper will be putting pen to paper on a new contract soon.

“I think we want him to stay and he wants to stay so I think we will find each other.

The 32-year-old signed for United in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. Since then, the Spaniard has been the number one for the Red Devils. The shot-stopper has put in some admirable performances at the Old Trafford side over the last decade.

At present, he and Phil Jones are the only two players on the Manchester-based club’s books who were part of the 2012/13 Premier League title-winning squad.

De Gea has been impressive on a number of occasions this season as well. The Spaniard has secured the PL Golden Glove in the current campaign, keeping 17 clean sheets so far.

Yet, the veteran goalkeeper has had a few slip-ups in between the sticks as well. Erik ten Hag seems keen on playing the ball out from the back. Unfortunately, in that regard, the Spaniard leaves a lot to be desired.

However, the gaffer does not have a lot of options in the goalkeeping department and has stuck with the 32-year-old. With all due respect, Tom Heaton and Jack Butland are not up to United’s standards.

Therefore, De Gea is our best bet for now. But it would be wise to add adequate competition in the squad to get the best out of the Spaniard.
