Manchester United are willing to reach a £30m agreement with Chelsea for Mateo Kovacic
As per Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are willing to reach a £30m agreement with Chelsea to sign Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic in the summer.
A few days ago, the Guardian reported that Kovacic is likely to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of this season even though his contract there runs until next summer. Their owners are of the understanding to let players go who have entered the final 12 months of their contract.
Manchester City had been keeping a close eye on the former Real Madrid player. But, United have kept close tabs as well and could crack a deal in the coming weeks.
Kovacic, 29, has been a fantastic player for Chelsea. He is an energetic presence in the middle of the park that marries up with his strong technical output on the ball.
United would be looking to sign a central midfielder this summer as the futures of Scott McTominay and Fred at the club are under threat. Both players have resorted to fringe roles under Erik ten Hag.
Kovacic has the experience, quality and winning mentality to come to Old Trafford and make a tangible difference.
The Croatian has played in dream World Cup runs for his country in 2018 and 2022. So, he knows how to perform when the pressure is at its highest peak.
With the price tag quoted due to his contract expiry next year, United should be all over this deal and get it done as soon as possible.
