Benni McCarthy credits collective effort in Marcus Rashford turnaround at Manchester United
Manchester United attacking coach Benni McCarthy has credited a collective effort from the management at the club for the turnaround in the form of Marcus Rashford.
The South African joined Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff at the start of the season. Since then, the 25-year-old has returned back to his best and the former FC Porto forward has been cited as a reason for the academy graduate’s improvement.
But speaking to iDiski Times (h/t Manchester Evening News), McCarthy, who featured for Blackburn Rover in the Premier League during his playing career, feels it has been a group effort to help players find their feet.
“That’s not just down to me. We are a team. Like I always have said to everyone ‘there’s no I in team’. When we do things, we do things as a collective.
“We try and achieve the best that we possibly can. So all the coaches contribute. Everyone has their function in the team to try and just make the team have success and that.”
McCarthy came to United with a bit of management experience in his home country. The South African was no slouch as a player himself, winning the Champions League under Jose Mourinho at Porto in 2004.
Rashford made his way through the youth ranks at the Old Trafford side and has established himself as a key player for the Red Devils. However, in the previous campaign, the academy graduate was a shadow of himself.
After the Euro 2020 campaign with the Three Lions, where Gareth Southgate’s team lost on penalties, the 25-year-old looked to have lost his confidence.
Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick last season, the England international hardly had an impact when he featured for the Manchester-based club.
Thankfully, Rashford has turned things around since Ten Hag’s arrival. He has shouldered the burden of the Red Devils’ attack this season, finding the back of the net 29 times in 51 appearances in all competitions.
