Manchester United express interest in activating Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae release clause

Manchester United have ‘expressed an interest’ in activating the £40 million release clause of Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae, according to the Daily Mail.

Apart from the Red Devils, Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the South Korea international. However, several other top European teams are eyeing the defender as well.

The 26-year-old has several options on the table if he decides to leave the Serie A giants after just one season. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain also have the former Fenerbahce star on their radar.

Min-jae prefers a move to the Premier League. However, the Naples-based club are looking to remove the centre-back’s buyout clause by offering him a new contract.

The South Korean has taken the Italian top flight by storm. Under Luciano Spalletti, the 26-year-old has immediately become a key player for the Partenopei as they look set to get their hands on the Scudetto after over three decades.

Min-jae has not let Napoli rue Kalidou Koulibaly’s departure, who joined Chelsea last summer. In the current campaign, the South Korean has made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A giants.

For now, United’s backline is stacked with quality. Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have been Erik ten Hag’s preferred duo at the Old Trafford side. As a result, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, who were regular starters last season, have lost their place in the team.

Our captain and the Sweden international have spent most of their time on the bench since the Dutch manager’s arrival. Therefore, it would not come as a surprise if either of them decides to part ways with the club next summer.

In that case, the Red Devils will evidently need to add defensive reinforcements. However, it would not make sense to splash the cash on a quality player like Min-jae at the moment, considering Varane and Martinez’s performances. Thus, it would be wise for us to instead go after a low-cost backup.
