Jamie Carragher feels Manchester United missed out on Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak
Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher feels Manchester United missed out on the transfer of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak in the summer of 2022.
The Red Devils put in a substantial offer for the Sweden international last summer. However, he ‘refused to join’ the Old Trafford side. In the end, the Magpies got him for £63 million.
Speaking on Monday Night Football (h/t Express), Carragher, who spent his entire career at the Anfield side, hailed the 23-year-old’s quality. The ex-defender feels the former Real Sociedad star would be a great addition to the Manchester-based club’s squad.
“I love him. I love watching him play. I mean Manchester United need a centre forward and you look at him, I think he’d actually be fantastic for Manchester United.
“They could have got him at the start of the season, but for me, since seeing him in his first appearance at Anfield he looked outstanding, he looked electric.”
Isak caught people’s attention during his stint at Borussia Dortmund. Then, in the summer of 2019, the striker made his way to the Reale Arena side and spent a few fruitful years there.
In his second season at La Real, the Sweden international thrived. Even though the 23-year-old was a bit underwhelming in the previous campaign, that did not deter Newcastle.
Isak has shone at the St James’ Park side. However, injuries have hampered the forward’s development under Eddie Howe. The Swedish national still has six goals to his name in 11 Premier League appearances.
United went into the 2022/23 season with Anthony Martial and Cristiano Ronaldo as the number nines. Unfortunately, the French national has been on the sidelines for most of the season due to fitness issues. On the other hand, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner left the club in November.
In January, the Red Devils got Wout Weghorst on loan. While the Holland international’s effort cannot be faulted, the 30-year-old leaves a lot to be desired with his finishing.

Therefore, we could have evidently done with someone like Isak in our ranks in the current campaign. It remains to be seen whether the 23-year-old will pop up on the club’s radar further down the line as well.
