Manchester United ‘want to keep’ shot-stopper David de Gea beyond the current campaign amidst ongoing contract negotiations with him, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

The Spain international’s existing deal with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the season (transfermarkt). However, the goalkeeper is hoping to extend his stay at the Old Trafford side.

At the moment, the Manchester-based club are still in discussion with the 32-year-old regarding key details like the salary structure and length of the contract. However, the two parties remain optimistic about the situation.

De Gea has been at United for over a decade now. The shot-stopper signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2011 from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and replaced Edwin van der Sar in between the sticks.

Initially, the Spaniard needed some time to settle in at the Old Trafford side. However, after a few seasons, the 32-year-old established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

But De Gea has also seen a few downs in Manchester. After the 2018 World Cup, his performances drastically dipped, and at one point, the shot-stopper was fighting for his place at the club.

However, since last season, the Spaniard has been in fine form. He has made some clutch saves to help United stay in games. The goalkeeper has continued to showcase his abilities under Erik ten Hag.

Unfortunately, the 32-year-old has shown a few frailties since the arrival of the Dutch manager. He has left a lot to be desired, with the Red Devils trying to play from out the back.

Also, De Gea is at an age where the Old Trafford side will soon have to look for his successor. Therefore, it would seemingly not be such a bad thing if the club were unable to come to terms with the Spaniard over a new contract.
