Manchester United hold ‘meeting’ for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia
Manchester United have held a ‘meeting’ for Romeo Lavia, who plays for Premier League rivals Southampton, regarding a summer move, according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils held discussions with the midfielder’s father earlier this month. Representatives from the Old Trafford side spoke with him regarding the 19-year-old.
In the upcoming transfer window, Erik ten Hag is expected to reinforce the middle of the perk with a central midfielder. It remains to be seen whether the Belgian youngster will be an option for the Manchester-based club.
Lavia signed for the Saints in the summer of 2022 from Manchester City in a deal worth around £14 million. Since then, the midfielder has shone during his short stint at the Saint Mary’s Stadium so far.
Pep Guardiola’s team have a £40 million buy-back clause in the youngster’s deal. However, it will only become active in the summer of 2024.
The 19-year-old’s future at the Hampshire-based club is secured for now. He has a contract until the end of the 2026/27 season. However, Ruben Selles’ team are fighting relegation at the moment. Dropping to the Championship could weaken their negotiating stance.
Southampton are at the bottom of the league table at the moment. But they are within reach of the teams above them and still have hope.
Lavia has been impressive this season. In 24 appearances in all competitions for the Saints, the youngster has scored one goal and provided one assist. The defensive midfielder was also on the bench for the Belgium national side in their 3-0 win over Sweden recently.

United’s midfield has been bolstered by Casemiro in the number six position. But the Brazilian does not seem to have an adequate backup in the squad. Will the Red Devils get the 19-year-old as an understudy to the 31-year-old? Only time will tell.
