Lionel Scaloni regrets Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho absence from Argentina national squad

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has expressed his regret at the absence of Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho from the national squad.

The 18-year-old was handed his first senior call-up by La Albiceleste for the upcoming international friendlies against Panama and Curacao. Unfortunately, the youngster had to pull out due to an injury.

Speaking to the media via TyC Sports, Scaloni lamented the forward’s unavailability. However, he will definitely be considered for future selections.

“He was called up, unfortunately he couldn’t come, also due to injury. We trust that he can be in the next call-up. He is a boy in whom we have high hopes, we will wait until he can get the shirt later.”

Garnacho signed for United in the summer of 2020 from Atletico Madrid. The Argentine thrived in the reserve sides over the years and won the FA Youth Cup last season with the U18s.

In the current campaign, the youngster has broken into the first-team setup. However, the forward had to bide his time to be given regular opportunities by Erik ten Hag.

Initially, the gaffer was reluctant to hand the 18-year-old a lot of minutes. But since his full debut in the 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the group stages of the Europa League, the winger has increased his influence in the team.

Over the last few months, Garnacho has put in some clutch performances for the Old Trafford side against the likes of Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup and Fulham and Manchester City in the Premier League.

The 18-year-old has broken onto the scene with his electric displays. He has made 29 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, having found the back of the net four times and providing five assists.

Hopefully, the youngster will not be out for long after picking up a knock in the 0-0 draw against Southampton recently. The Argentine still has a lot of time to develop and get into the South American nation’s national squad.
