Manchester United ‘prepared’ to discuss new contract with Facundo Pellistri

Manchester United are ‘prepared’ to discuss the possibility of tying Uruguay international Facundo Pellistri down to a new contract, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

The Red Devils signed the youngster in the summer of 2020 for €10 million from Penarol. Now, the Old Trafford side are happy with the investment they made in the 21-year-old.

Having joined the Manchester-based club, Pellistri initially spent his time in the youth team before being loaned out to Deportivo Alaves. The Uruguayan spent 18 months at the La Liga outfit.

In Spain last season, the youngster was influential at the beginning but lost his place in the team over time. The forward made 23 appearances in all competitions in the previous campaign for Los Blanquiazules but was unable to find the back of the net or provide an assist.

Last summer, the 21-year-old returned to United and played a part during the pre-season. However, Erik ten Hag has hardly given him any game time this term.

Pellistri finally made his United debut in the 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, coming on in the final minutes of the match. The Uruguayan also got his first start and played the full 90 minutes in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League against Real Betis.

Overall, the youngster has made eight appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils in the current campaign, providing one assist. The 21-year-old also shone for his national side in the 2022 World Cup.

Ten Hag has trusted Antony on the right wing, while Marcus Rashford has been the gaffer’s most reliable player on the left-hand side of the attack. Alejandro Garnacho has also broken into the first team as of late.

Pellistri has shown his qualities and potential in recent weeks. Thus, it would be wise for the Old Trafford side to secure his future. But it remains to be seen whether the Uruguayan will leave the club in the coming months for regular opportunities.
