Paul Scholes asks Erik ten Hag to rest Manchester United duo Luke Shaw and Casemiro

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has asked Erik ten Hag to rest Luke Shaw and Casemiro after the win over Real Betis in the Europa League.

Manuel Pellegrini’s team visited Old Trafford on Thursday (9 March). In the first leg of the round of 16 tie against the La Liga outfit, the Red Devils got a 4-1 win.

Speaking after the match via Metro, Scholes, who spent almost two decades as a player at United, urged the Dutch manager to rotate the team for the second leg next week. The ex-Red Devil feels some players could do with a rest.

“I don’t think Ten Hag likes making lots of changes. He likes players having rhythm, but with the schedule and the amount of games they’ve played, some of these players need a rest now. I thought Shaw looked like he needed a rest tonight, Casemiro looks like he needs a rest.”

Ten Hag started the same XI that faced a humiliating loss to Liverpool in our last Premier League game. The Merseysiders beat the Old Trafford side 7-0. Jurgen Klopp’s team overwhelmed us in the second half and scored six goals past David de Gea.

However, the gaffer opted to let the same players redeem themselves versus Betis, Shaw and Casemiro included. While the left-back was substituted in the 65th minute for Tyrell Malacia, the Brazil international played the entire 90 minutes.

The former Real Madrid star had a game to forget against Jurgen Klopp’s team. For the first time at United, the 31-year-old struggled in the middle of the park.

As for Shaw, he was culpable in the backline for some of the goals Liverpool scored in our historic defeat. However, the 27-year-old England international was good in the victory over the Verdiblancos.

However, this season has been a long one. After a congested first half of the campaign, most of our first-team players were on the plane to Qatar for their respective nations and featured in the 2022 World Cup.

United have had an even tougher run of fixtures, with the Red Devils going all the way in the Carabao Cup and still being alive in the UEL and FA Cup. However, it remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will change things around a bit in the coming weeks.
