Erik ten Hag admits Liverpool drubbing a “big lesson” for Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that the 7-0 drubbing of the Red Devils at the hands of Liverpool was a “big lesson” for the team.

The Red Devils visited Anfield in our last Premier League fixture. Both teams were competitive in the first half. However, Jurgen Klopp’s team ended up scoring six goals against the Old Trafford side after the break to hand us a historic loss.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, the Dutch manager was disappointed in United’s performances. However, the gaffer wants the Red Devils to bounce back and learn from the loss.

“How negative it is, we were really below average, especially mentally-wise. We have to take the lessons, we want to be a big team, we want to win trophies, then you have to act differently, after Sunday we got a big lesson, we take that and now we have to move on and look forward. That’s the way we treated it, now all the energy, all the focus has to be on the next game.”

Ten Hag was appointed in the Old Trafford side’s dugout at the end of the season. Subsequently, the former Ajax head coach has managed to relatively steady the ship in Manchester.

After defeats in the first two fixtures of the campaign versus Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, the Dutch manager has done well to have us firmly in the top four.

However, in between, we have had some not-so-flattering results. Against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, United conceded six goals, with hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

However, since the end of the 2022 World Cup, the Old Trafford side had been on a roll and had lost just against Arsenal prior to the Liverpool match.

We also lifted the Carabao Cup last month. It was our first trophy in six years. Unfortunately, those celebrations have been drowned out by the trip to Anfield.

However, the Red Devils cannot let the 7-0 loss affect their performances going forward. We are still competing in the Europa League and FA Cup. The Manchester-based club also need to secure Champions League qualification. Hopefully, the Liverpool loss will just be a blip in a successful campaign for us.
