Newcastle United ‘shortlist’ Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay
Premier League rivals Newcastle United have added Manchester United star and Scotland international Scott McTominay to their ‘shortlist’, according to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Magpies are eyeing a move for the midfielder in the upcoming transfer window. Eddie Howe is keen to add reinforcements in the middle of the park to his squad. The former AFC Bournemouth head coach is a big admirer of the 26-year-old.
Next summer, the Red Devils will also look to trim their ranks and part ways with some of the players. McTominay could be one of the stars who end their stint with the Old Trafford side.
The Scottish national made his way through the youth ranks at Man United. In the 2017/18 season, the midfielder established himself in the Red Devils’ senior squad.
Over the years, the 26-year-old has become a pivotal member of the first-team setup. In the previous two campaigns, he played a big role in the Old Trafford side’s starting lineup.
However, McTominay has lost his place in the team this season. He has made 29 appearances in all competitions. But the Scottish national has started just once in our last 19 league matches.
Man United bolstered the engine room in the summer of 2022 with the addition of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. They have been the ones Erik ten Hag has preferred in his XI on most occasions.
However, it has been the Brazil international who has evidently made a real difference in the team. The former Real Madrid star has cemented his place in the number six position in the starting lineup.

As a result, McTominay has fallen down the pecking order. Other players like Fred and on-loan star Marcel Sabitzer have also been handed more game time than the Scottish national in recent weeks. Therefore, it would not come as a surprise if the 26-year-old decided to join Newcastle next summer.
The Magpies have fallen off the pace in the last few fixtures. However, they are still in the race for a top-four finish. Bruno Guimarães, Sean Longstaf and Joelinton have played a lot together in the middle of the park. It remains to be seen whether McTominay will be there next season.
