Trent Alexander-Arnold on switching off the TV before Manchester United lifted the Carabao Cup
Speaking to The Telegraph, Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold reveals that he switched off the TV before Manchester United lifted the Carabao Cup last Sunday.
United beat Newcastle in the final to win their first major silverware in six years. Erik ten Hag has delivered a trophy in his first season in charge of the club. And there might be more to come as the Red Devils are alive in the three remaining competitions.
Seeing Manchester United succeed would of course not please any Liverpool player, is it? So, knowing that Alexander-Arnold had to turn off his TV before the trophy presentation is not surprising. United players would do the same had it been the other way around.
Anyway, here’s what the mercurial right-back said (h/t The Telegraph):
“I watched the game, but as soon as they were getting ready for the trophy lift I turned off. I thought, ‘There is no way I am watching that’. Knowing they lifted that trophy? It burns. Oh yeah. It definitely burns.”
After not being relevant in the past few seasons, it is good to see United slowly getting back to the perch under ten Hag.
To stay alive in the title race though, they have to go to Anfield and get a win later today. It would not only get them three points closer to Arsenal with a game in hand but send a resounding message to everyone in Europe that this team can do anything this season.
It won’t be easy though because Liverpool generally do well at their home ground irrespective of current form (barring the 2020/21 season). So, as much as ten Hag’s men will go into that game full of confidence, there has to be a sense of humility that things will be tough and they have to ride the wrongs with the rights.

What this message from Alexander-Arnold tells us is that there is a burning rivalry alive between Liverpool and Manchester United. Players from both teams use the success of the other to fuel their own push forward.
