Manchester United ‘keeping tabs’ on Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia

Manchester United, along with several other clubs in the Premier League, are ‘keeping tabs’ on Southampton star Romeo Lavia, according to the Daily Mail.

There is growing interest in the 19-year-old who joined the Saints in the summer of 2022. Chelsea have already enquired about the Belgium U21 international.

The Red Devils admire the youngster. However, Arsenal are also monitoring the defensive midfielder. The Old Trafford side and Mikel Arteta’s team are assessing their options ahead of the upcoming transfer window in order to bolster the middle of the park.

Lavia made his way through the youth ranks at bitter rivals Manchester City before the Saint Mary’s Stadium side came knocking. The Belgian signed a five-year contract with the Hampshire-based club.

The Sky Blues have a £40 million buyback clause for the midfielder. Next summer, Pep Guardiola’s team will be able to trigger that option if they choose to do so.

Southampton are struggling in the current campaign. The Saints are sitting at the bottom of the English top-flight table. But still, the 19-year-old has been impressive, scoring one goal and providing one assist in 20 appearances in all competitions for the Hampshire-based club.

In the summer of 2022, United bolstered their midfield ranks with the addition of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. The two have made a big difference in the Red Devils’ engine room.

The former Real Madrid star has especially been pivotal to our success in the current campaign. Erik ten Hag has relied on the Brazil international in the number six position for most of the season.

However, we do not seem to have an appropriate backup for Casemiro. Scott McTominay and Fred have not been consistent enough over the years. As for Lavia, he is young and talented. The 19-year-old’s potential evidently makes him an excellent understudy to the Brazilian.
