Michael Owen believes Manchester United are in the title race after the win over Leeds United

Speaking to Premier League Productions (h/t Metro), former Manchester United striker Michael Owen believes that the Red Devils are in the title race following their win over Leeds United at Elland Road.

Late goals from Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho ensured a tricky yet satisfying 2-0 win for United over their rivals away in Yorkshire. The win put them although keeps them third in the table, the difference in points between them and leaders Arsenal is now down to five.

The only caveat is that the Red Devils have played two games more than the Gunners. Even second-placed Manchester City have played a game less than us and are two points ahead. So, while mathematically it is still possible, let’s not look too far ahead of ourselves.

Anyway, here’s what Owen said when asked about the title chances (h/t Metro):

“Absolutely [when asked whether United are in the race].

“If Man City and Arsenal were playing like they were a few months ago, then I would say it’s between those two. But both of them are stumbling.

“Arsenal, one point from six. Man City, I can’t see them going on an amazing run like they have the last few years.

“They’ve got to play each other twice as well so there will be points dropped there.”

While the points put across by Owen is right, we have to accept that our squad is currently not good enough to fight on all fronts. We have a cup final to look forward to, along with a key Europa League tie against Barcelona.

Will Erik ten Hag sacrifice the cup competitions to try and go on a run in the league? We would highly doubt so given the fact that the club hasn’t won a major trophy in six years.

Our first aim should always be to win a silverware first, preferably on 26th February (Carabao Cup Final). If the league offers a chance to have a crack around the latter half of March, then we can think about it. Until then, the focus should be on keeping the performance levels high.
