Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has reaffirmed his commitment to the club

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, while speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News) post his side’s 2-0 win over Leeds United speaks about his future at the club and reaffirms that he is fully committed to having a good finish to the season.

Maguire, who was signed from Leicester City under Ole Gunner Solksjaer was the first-choice defender until Erik ten Hag took over where he has seen his position drop to Raphael Varane.

Ten Hag is very keen to stay to his principles which include having a pairing of left and right-footed players in central defence, which has resulted in Maguire competing for one place with Varane and Victor Lindelof.

While acknowledging that it has not been easy to wait for minutes, he gives a very responsible reply and speaks about having healthy competition in the squad.

“Well like I said, it’s not about me, it’s about the team, it’s about the club being successful. Obviously I want to be a part of it, I’m still playing my part coming on in games, I’ve started four since the World Cup so I’m still getting my minutes, but of course every footballer wants to start games.

It’s disappointing when you don’t but all you can do is train well and be ready when the chance comes. There’s lots of players in the squad not playing at the moment as well, and I feel we have four really good, physical, international centre backs at this club, and there’s always going to be two unhappy.”

It is not easy to be a captain of the club and see reduced minutes but Maguire has acted like a proper professional since the change of decision by the manager.

To his fairness, he has performed well when called upon and rarely disappointed and was once again playing at a top level in the win over Leeds.

United are the only club left in the league which is still competing in four different competitions and therefore a good squad capable of challenging each other for a place in the starting lineup is crucial.

We still have four months of football left to play and therefore adequate rest and recovery also need to be given to the players in need.

It does seem like Maguire and the club are keen to end the season on a high note and then analyse where things stand for the England international.

More Manchester United News:

With him falling down the pecking order, there is a big possibility that the current captain could end up leaving the club in the summer.

It looks like an ideal solution for all parties involves as Maguire would get the much-needed game-time at another top club while United would be able to recoup some amount of the huge fee spent to acquire his services from Leicester.
