Blow for Manchester United as Chelsea make Napoli striker Victor Osimhen their priority for the summer
The news of Chelsea’s interest in Victor Osimhen, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News), has come as a blow for Manchester United. The Red Devils have been admirers of Osimhen for some time and were expected to push for a deal come June.
However, now that Chelsea have identified Osimhen as their priority target for the summer, United may have to brace themselves for tough competition. It could mean that a transfer battle is on the cards in the summer.
The Blues have spent a considerable amount of money since Todd Boehly took over last summer. They have invested around £600 million in the last two windows in a bid to strengthen their squad, although the results have not been evident on the field.
Despite the new arrivals, Chelsea’s recent 0-0 draws have highlighted their need for a leading man. The club’s manager, Graham Potter, is said to be keen on Osimhen and may be willing to offer Romelu Lukaku, currently on loan at Inter Milan, as leverage in any deal with Napoli.
Osimhen’s form this season has been phenomenal, with 16 goals in 17 games, and this has made him a target for Europe’s top clubs. The Nigerian forward has played a crucial role in Napoli’s current standing at the top of Serie A and his performances have not gone unnoticed.
United’s interest in Osimhen is understandable, given their need for a striker. The club has been lacking a reliable goal scorer for some time and the Nigerian forward’s form suggests he could be the answer to United’s problems.
Yet another name has been linked with a move for the Nigerian superstar. German giants Bayern Munich also want Osimhen as they look to finally replace Robert Lewandowski who left the club for Barcelona back in the summer.
All this points to there being a tough fight for the signature of Osimhen. One thing that could work our way when it comes to Chelsea is the fact that we are better placed to secure a Champions League finish than the Blues are.
