Manchester United duo David de Gea and Marcus Rashford in Garth Crooks’ Premier League Team of the Week
Manchester United duo David de Gea and Marcus Rashford have been included in Garth Crooks’ Premier League Team of the Week.
The Spaniard and English nationals were pivotal for the Red Devils as they took on Crystal Palace. On Saturday (4 February), the Eagles visited Old Trafford and lost 2-1.
On BBC Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), former Tottenham Hotspur star Crooks was impressed with De Gea’s performance for United. The ex-forward feels the 32-year-old was a reason for our victory.
“The save from Marc Guehi’s point-blank header was De Gea at his best. With little more than 20 minutes left to play and United down to ten men against Crystal Palace, after Casemiro had been sent off for violent conduct, the Spanish keeper kept his side’s hopes of winning alive.”
Casemiro was sent off at around the 70th-minute mark after a scuffle between the two sets of players. The Brazilian was handed his marching orders for putting his hands on Will Hughes.
In the 75th minute, Palace were awarded a corner. Marc Guehi found himself in open space and steered his header on goal. However, the former Atletico Madrid star was on hand to palm it away. Although subsequently, the Eagles scored.
However, it did not matter in the end. United had already found the back of the net twice before. After Bruno Fernandes’ penalty in the opening minutes of the match, Rashford doubled the Red Devils’ lead in the second half. And Crooks has been impressed by the forward.
“Rashford lost his form and focus last season and his game suffered as a consequence. However, with 19 goals since the arrival of Ten Hag, the England striker has recaptured his goalscoring prowess and put United on course for a top-four finish.”
The England international has shouldered the burden of the Old Trafford side’s attack in the current campaign. With Cristiano Ronaldo leaving and Anthony Martial on the sidelines for considerable periods of the season, the 25-year-old has stepped up.
United have exceeded some people’s expectations with their displays in the current campaign. We are currently firmly set to finish in the top four in the league.
