Erik ten Hag hopes Anthony Martial can remain consistently fit after goalscoring return for Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag hopes Anthony Martial can remain fit consistently after making a goalscoring return against Nottingham Forest.

The Tricky Trees visited Old Trafford on Wednesday (1 February) in the second leg of the Carabao Cup final. Steve Cooper’s team lost 2-0 as the France international and Fred got on the score sheet.

In the first leg, the Red Devils beat the West Bridgford side 3-0. We have now set up a final at Wembley Stadium against Newcastle United.

Martial has been a key player for the Dutch manager this season. Unfortunately, fitness issues have meant that the former AS Monaco star has been unavailable for most of the season.

In the current campaign, the 27-year-old has made 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing three assists. However, the French national has not played the full 90 minutes in any match under the new gaffer.

Martial came on at around the hour mark for Man United and broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute. Speaking after the victory over Forest via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag aspires to have the French national fit on a regular basis.

“I don’t know if he has been all the time down, but he’s not always available, we hope he will be available for a couple of games, a couple of weeks and months and if that’s the case he can be much more successful.”

Cristiano Ronaldo parted ways with the Red Devils midway through the season. As a result, the Dutch manager had only one natural number nine in the squad until the arrival of Wout Weghorst.

Martial has been on the sidelines in the last few matches. The Holland international has had to deputise for the 27-year-old.

While the 30-year-old has done well, we evidently cannot have just one fit striker in the squad. The Old Trafford side are still alive in all four competitions. Now, it remains to be seen whether the former Monaco star can get over his fitness issues.
