Manchester United are anticipated to ‘resist’ the approaches from Newcastle United for Scott McTominay in the ongoing transfer window, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Manchester Evening News].
The Magpies are looking to bolster their engine room in January. Eddie Howe is a big admirer of the Scotland international and has been after him to bolster the Tyneside outfit’s squad.
Since the summer of 2022, the 26-year-old has been attracting interest from Newcastle. However, Erik ten Hag has no intention of parting ways with the midfielder until the end of the season.
The Dutch gaffer is keen on keeping hold of McTominay due to a lack of time and money needed in order to find his replacement. However, what fate has in store for the Scottish national in the upcoming transfer window remains to be seen.
Currently, the Magpies have Bruno Guimaraes in their ranks playing as the deepest-lying midfielder. However, Howe’s team would like to play the Brazil international further up front.
Man United’s engine room at the moment is being occupied by Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. The duo have started the majority of the matches this season for the Red Devils.
Apart from the two, Fred and McTominay are the only two established options at the gaffer’s disposal. However, the Scottish national has found game time hard to come since the Dutch manager’s appointment.
The 26-year-old started for the first time in the Premier League after 12 games in the Old Trafford side’s defeat to Arsenal. Unfortunately, the midfielder was unable to make a mark in Casemiro’s absence.

McTominay has turned into a bit-part player at Man United. No player hopes to spend most of their time on the bench. Therefore, it would not come as a surprise if the 26-year-old decided to join Newcastle in the coming months.
