Manchester United expect Marcus Rashford and David de Gea to pen new deals
According to The Times [Subscription Required] (h/t The Express), Manchester United are hopeful that Marcus Rashford and David de Gea will sign new contracts to extend their stay at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag’s arrival has brought with it new energy and fresh ideas to the Theatre of Dreams. Rashford and De Gea have shown some level of resurgence and have been key pivots in the Dutchman’s Red Devils’ rebuild.
Rashford, in particular, has been among the goals of late and has stepped up in the club’s lack of a reliable striker. With no signing forthcoming this month, the Englishman will continue to be a key cog in the system this season.
The 25-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the 2022-23 season. Man United have the option to extend it by another year, something they will in all likelihood exercise should an agreement be signed by then.
Rashford has more than thrice the number of goals in comparison to Man United’s second top goalscorer this season. In many ways, the Red Devils could have been languishing further down the table had it not been for his goals.
He finally looks to be back to his best and it would be foolish on the club’s part to not tie him down for years to come. The sooner we do it, the better.
De Gea, meanwhile, has been inconsistent this season. He continues to be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and looks set to continue so in the near future.
The Spaniard is the club’s top earner at £375,000-a-week and is amongst the few players left at the club from Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign. His experience is an invaluable tool for a young side that isn’t geared to win trophies just yet.
De Gea is expected to agree to reduced terms, something that will reflect in his wages. Doing so is also in the club’s interest. Far too long have we chosen to throw money at problems rather than look for solutions.

Signing on the experienced veterans to long-term deals will offer Ten Hag the leaders he needs to accelerate the rebuild. The sooner we have them commit to the cause, the better.
