Manchester United ‘interested’ in Inter Milan striker and Argentina World Cup winner Lautaro Martinez

According to Calciomercato (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are ‘interested’ in Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez, who was recently crowned a World Cup champion after Argentina’s triumph in Qatar.

Apart from the Red Devils, Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also eyeing the 25-year-old’s signature. However, the Nerazzurri are looking for €100 million to part ways with the striker.

Martinez joined the Serie A giants in the summer of 2018 from Racing Club in Argentina. Since then, the forward has developed into a quality striker for the Italian outfit.

The 25-year-old is a prolific goalscorer and has consistently found the back of the net for Inter over the years. In the 2021/22 campaign, he formed a formidable partnership with former United star Romelu Lukaku up front for the Nerazzurri as they lifted the Scudetto after an 11-year gap.

This season, the striker has once again been a key player for Simone Inzaghi’s team. He scored in the 3-0 victory over bitter rivals AC Milan recently to lift the Supercoppa Italiana.

However, while La Albicelete lifted the 2022 World Cup trophy, on the pitch, Martinez had a tournament to forget. Manchester City star Julian Alvarez pipped him to a starting place in Lionel Scaloni’s team as the 25-year-old was underwhelming.

United’s front line lost Cristiano Ronaldo midway through the season. Subsequently, the Red Devils have signed Wout Weghorst on loan to provide support for Anthony Martial in the number nine position.

Marcus Rashford has also played as the striker on several occasions for Erik ten Hag. The 25-year-old has shouldered the burden of our attack in the current campaign.

Therefore, it would be wise for the Old Trafford side to look for a long-term goalscorer in the attack. Martinez ticks the boxes due to his age and talent. However, will we be able to get a hold of the Argentine’s signature? Only time will tell.
