Rio Ferdinand confident about Manchester United getting postie result against Manchester City
Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand is confident about the Red Devils getting a positive result against Manchester City. We will take on the Sky Blues in the Premier League on 14 January at home.
In the previous fixture between the two, Pep Guardiola’s team got the better of the Old Trafford side. The match ended in a 6-3 defeat for us, with hat tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.
However, speaking via The Sun, Ferdinand, who spent 12 years of his playing career at United, is optimistic about Erik ten Hag’s team performing well. The ex-defender is not fearful anymore.
“I’m going into this derby thinking, ‘We can give them a game’. You can see players gaining in confidence. For far too long we were going into games thinking, ‘Obviously, we are going to get beat here today but I don’t know how many’.”
For the majority of Ferdinand’s time with the Red Devils, City were not a team that were considered a top side. However, after their takeover in 2008, they have now become a force to be reckoned with.
United have fallen down the mantle they first stood on. In the previous five league fixtures at Old Trafford, we have won just once.
Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, the Red Devils have been unable to get their hand on a PL title. On the other hand, the Sky Blues have been champions in four of the last five seasons.
Going into the derby this time around, United are in fine form. We have won our last eight fixtures in all competitions. The Red Devils have also kept a clean sheet in the last three league games.
As for City, they have been a bit shaky. Guardiola’s team are currently second in the table, behind Arsenal. They recently dropped points against Everton and lost their previous fixture to Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

But even though the Sky Blues have dwindled, they are still a quality team. We need to be at our best to go toe-to-toe with the Cityzens. They will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the derby. However, United need to make sure they make a statement of their own.
